NSP nació en 2001 a partir de la visión de Bruce "Buzz" Hansen, un surfista de toda la vida, skater y todo un waterman. Mientras trabajaba en Maui como shaper de tablas de surf, Buzz tuvo una idea sobre la producción de tablas de surf asequibles, versátiles, duraderas y de gran rendimiento. Buzz se dio cuenta de que había surfistas de a pie que necesitaban una tabla asequible que rindiera en Hawaii, pero que no necesitaban tablas "a medida" o para la competición o el surf extremo.
NSP comenzó a vender en Hawaii y Australia en 2002 con un éxito inmediato, haciendo el surf más accesible para todos.
